Meet the HerStory 2022 Participants!

 


Out of well over 100 applications, we’re extremely thrilled to introduce you to the 30 women selected to participate in the HerStory 2022 Story-pitch Competition!

On Saturday, June 4, 2022, these women will tell a panel of champions from various industries who they are, how they came to their idea and why investing in them will bring innovation, value and impact: both to their industry and to the future of more equitable access to Canadian capital.

And one might just walk away with an investment to fund their business!

Annika Mang, Co-founder and CEO, TrailCollectiv, Regina, SK

Annika Mang is the co-founder and CEO of TrailCollectiv with a Bachelor in Education and a Bachelor in Physical Education. Annika is passionate about encouraging families to connect outdoors and has gained over 40,000 social media followers within the outdoor family travel space. She has worked as a highschool teacher, a writer, photographer, social media specialist and content creator for a variety of brands, and tourism boards. In June 2020, she self-published her first hiking guide "Hikes for Families: A Guide to the Canadian Rockies" by funding the printing of the book through Kickstarter.


Ashlee Posner, Founder, State of Change, Toronto, ON

Ashlee is the Founder of The Perfume Bar and has spent the last 12 years in the fragrance industry, launching her custom fragrance brand at Sephora and HSN, eventually pivoting their famous ‘Perfume Bar’ into the events industry. Prior to that, Ashlee held roles at Estee Lauder and Ahava on the manufacturing side of the industry and spent a year in Grasse, the centre of the fragrance industry, where she fell in love with science of scent, Aromachology. With a unique understanding of the industry and problems along with deep domain expertise, she has created State of Change, to revolutionize a veiled industry and change the state of everything the consumer associates with fine fragrance.


Audrey Bond, Founder and CEO, Vaultt, Ottawa, ON

Audrey Bond has been an entrepreneur for over 30 years. As the founder and CEO of Vaultt, she is passionate about helping patients and families dealing with chronic health problems manage their health journey, and specifically their health information. Her desire to help others came from a place of need as she was caring for her aging parents, who were both disabled, and she struggled to find a solution that worked. Audrey graduated from the University of Ottawa, way back in 1995 and has worked both as a military and medical photographer. A passionate self-described foodie, Audrey also attended Le Cordon Bleu Cooking School. Over the years, Audrey has mentored youth through various Entrepreneurship Programs. She has spoken on many panels on the topic of entrepreneurship and is currently mentoring three youth entrepreneurs, including her 18-year-old daughter. Audrey has won multiple pitch competitions including SheBoot and has been featured in Forbes Magazine.


Dr. Beverly Young, Co-founder, BRIA, Toronto, ON

Dr. Bev Young is the co-founder of BRIA, a one-stop shop for women's mental health care. She is an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto and a Psychiatrist with over 20 years of experience, specializing in women’s mental health issues across the reproductive life cycle. Her career has focused specifically on mood and anxiety disorders relating to pregnancy, infertility, perinatal loss and postpartum adjustment. Before co-founding BRIA, Dr. Young developed and led two of the largest perinatal psychiatry programs in Ontario- the Reproductive Life Stages Program at Women’s College Hospital and the Perinatal Mental Health Program at Mount Sinai Hospital. She has been a pioneer in telemedicine services for the perinatal population, and has been using virtual care to treat patients across Ontario since 2014. As a leader in her field, she is relentlessly dedicated to improving access to high quality reproductive psychiatric care. She has been involved in community and academic education throughout her career, and has trained many other perinatal psychiatrists across Ontario. With her new virtual clinic, BRIA, she hopes to provide access to mental health services to women across Canada.


Brandy Kinkead, CTO, Nano-Lit, Calgary, AB

Brandy is a scientist and entrepreneur with a passion for green energy and nanotechnologies. She has spent the majority of her career making nanomaterials and configuring microscopes to take beautiful images of them. Over the past 5 years, Brandy has developed a huge passion for entrepreneurship, seeing the potential for nanotechnologies and nanomaterials to revolutionize energy and human health.


Dr. Fiona Simpson, Co-founder and CEO, BioMimir, Sherbrooke, QC

Fiona is a research scientist and entrepreneur who is passionate about bringing the promise of biomaterials-assisted regenerative medicine to communities around the world. Fiona has worked in academic and industrial medical research for over 17 years in areas spanning cardiovascular disease, neuroscience, dermatology, psychiatry, and ophthalmology. When she discovered the field of regenerative medicine, she knew that she had found a scientific discipline that combined her skills in biomedical research with her passion for transformative change in healthcare. Fiona co-founded BioMimir to translate biomaterials from ideas into medical devices. Fiona received her Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the Université de Montréal in 2022, where she specialized in regenerative medicine for the cornea. She won the 2021-2022 award for the best doctoral thesis in Biomedical Engineering. She’s an experienced manager in pilot-scale cleanroom manufacturing for biomaterials, and she directed the OPhthalmic Tissue Engineering Cleanrooms (OPTEC) at Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont from 2018-2021.


Hong Phuc Nguyen, Founder, Kibbi, Calgary, AB

Ms. Hong Phuc founded Kibbi in 2021 as an initiative to first help her non-profit organization's members, Vietnamese newcomers, to find jobs in Calgary despite the peak of a labour shortage during COVID-19. The app is an entry-level job listing platform with the mission to redefine the job search experience for newcomers, and to help small businesses get the support they need to operate and function by completely redesigning how "Help Wanted" is listed and shared.

Putting location and proximity to jobs as focus, the app lists jobs visually via a map, providing equal visibility for all job opportunities from big and small businesses alike. Imagine a newcomer can now skip the 1-hour bus ride to work and apply to businesses in her neighbourhood, a single mom can now see who is hiring near daycare, and youth can easily apply for part-time jobs near school and home. Moreover, Kibbi is also the first multilingual job portal in the market. It translates job listings into 60 languages and notifies the English fluency required for each job, giving newcomers, especially basic English speakers, the confidence to apply and enter the workforce. The app is validated by the most prominent newcomer non-profit organizations and many ethnic communities in Alberta. Since the MVP in March 2022, the app has had close to 700 downloads, with 30 employers signed up. Ms. Hong Phuc is the chairwoman of the Calgary Vietnamese Women Association and an MBA graduate with Dean’s List from The University of Hongkong. Before immigrating to Canada, she had 10 years of experience in marketing and sales for both startup and Fortune 500 companies in Malaysia, the Philippines, Hong Kong and Vietnam.


Iida Cisecki, Founder and CEO, Quibbit, Calgary, AB

Iida Cisecki is the Founder and CEO of Quibbit Inc, building the future of automotive services. She is a World Citizen, a Project Management specialist, as well as an Investor. Iida has been immersed in startup culture for as long as she can remember. A strong believer in empowering the team, Iida focuses on agile management and giving employees the power to use their creativity in problem-solving. Iida enjoys spending time with her young family but you can also find her on the golf course or climbing in the Rockies.


Inara Lalani, Co-founder and COO, FemTherapeutics, Montréal, QC

Inara Lalani received a BCom. from McGill University with a Major in Information Systems, Entrepreneurship and Surgical Innovation. At 19, she founded FemTherapeutics with a mission to personalize precision medicine for women. Currently acting as the COO, FemTherapeutics is developing the world's first customized gynaecological prosthetic to treat pelvic floor issues using AI and 3D printing. Prior to this, she worked in technology consulting at EY, Bell Canada, and Keurig Dr. Pepper, focusing on business development and transformation, product management, data strategy/analytics, and UI/UX design. 


Jenna Galloway, Founder and CEO, Wymbin, Calgary, AB

Jenna is the Founder and Managing Director of Wymbin, a youth wellness and education studio located in Inglewood, Calgary. The studio offers a Licensed Preschool & Kindergarten program, camps, and offerings that support families in allowing their children to thrive during the most crucial developmental years. Wymbin provides comprehensive school wellness programs and professional development opportunities to schools and organizations in Calgary. Wymbin also has development a Yoga Alliance recognized Teacher Training Program and has trained over 800 instructors throughout North America. Jenna is also the Founder of BEAM Foundation- a registered charity that provides free access to programs that support wellbeing for young people who may not otherwise have these opportunities. BEAM stands for Balance, Empower, Action, and Movement. Through the provision of programs that integrate physical literacy and emotional competency, BEAM partners with Alberta organizations to support them in providing opportunities for all youth to thrive. After 10 years of experience within the health, education, and wellness industries in Calgary, Jenna identified a gap in the market where Education Technology can be used in a preventative approach to building capacity in young students ages Kindergarten to Grade 3. She is currently working with a team to develop an EdTech platform that can be used at home and in school settings that will build social-emotional competency and functional capacity within young students so that they can face the challenges of daily life with resilience and the ‘tools’ they need.


Julia Rivard Dexter, Co-founder and CEO, Shoelace, Lake Loon, NS

Julia Rivard Dexter is an innovative tech entrepreneur focused on impact, one of the top 50 Canadian women in STEM, former Olympian and mother of 4. Julia has founded and led several successful technology ventures, including as CEO of Google’s first North American premier GoogleApps partner. Currently the Co-Founder and CEO of Shoelace Learning, she leads one of the most innovative education technology companies in North America, which delivers the best education for millions of kids through video games they love. Julia has been honoured with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal and BMO’s Global Growth and Innovation Award and is a member of the Board of Nova Scotia Power.


Julie Legault, Founder and CEO, Amino Labs, Lethbridge, AB

Julie Legault is a human-centered designer and entrepreneur from the city of Montreal and an expert in transforming complex technology into experiences for non-experts. Over the last decade, Julie has worked in design research, user experience and in the maker movement. Julie began her career earning a B.F.A. (Design and Computation Art), and a G.Cert. (Digital Technologies in Design Art Practice) from Concordia University in Montreal. She furthered her skills and knowledge by completing a Master of Art (School of Materials) at the Royal College of Art in London, United Kingdom and a Master of Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab. Since very early access to computing in her 1980s childhood, Julie has pursued understanding and translating complex technologies to the uninitiated through teaching and applied design. During her career, Julie won and attended Design Residencies worldwide, taught at Birmingham’s Institute of Art and Design (UK), the Royal College of Art, and worked with multi-nationals, and pop stars such as Rihanna to develop accessible smart materials, wearables and biometric devices. Her work has been published and exhibited globally, notably in Wired Magazine, NYT, NPR, MoMA, ARS Electronica, and the Victoria & Albert Museum. Her unexpected foray into DNA technology inspired her so thoroughly that finding an accessible entry point in complex science became the focus of her MIT Media Lab graduate thesis. It led her to found Amino Labs, an MIT spinout that builds hardware and biotechnology experiences to make learning, doing and innovating in genetic engineering accessible to children, non-scientists. Throughout her career, Julie participated and mentored in several entrepreneurship environments, including IndieBio (Biotechnology Startup Accelerator), and E14 (MIT Media Lab Startup Accelerator). Julie is also a proud fellow of the Coaching Fellowship program for Extraordinary Young Women Leaders of Impact, and biotechnology faculty at Singularity University Global.


Karen Danudjaja, Co-founder and CEO, Blume Supply, North Vancouver, BC

In Karen's previous life she worked in commercial real estate. It's an industry built on coffee meetings and she started to feel it. She loved the cafe experience but was frustrated that every option on cafe menus was either filled with syrup or based in espresso. Like most consumers, Karen wasn’t a health expert or a nutritionist, and found the supplements aisle confusing and expensive. She saw a huge gap in the market. Blume is a line up of familiar cafe latte flavours that are all organic, refined sugar free and made with superfoods. ​Blume's mission is to bridge the gap between the cafe experience and the wellness aisle, making healthy options no-compromise, accessible at less than $1 a serving and flavour first. Blume has 10 different flavours which include rotating seasonals, are adding fun back to wellness rituals, and is a team is made up of 13 women. Blume are heading into their first capital raise and expansion of their product lines so they can tackle new and exciting growth opportunities. Blume was built out of a desire to find a like-minded community and elevate women. Karen hopes to build on her community at WBE to both find and give support to a group of women-leaders. 


Dr. Karolina Valente, CEO and CSO, VoxCell Bioninnovation, Victoria, BC

Karolina has a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering. She has deep expertise in tissue engineering, 3D bioprinting, and oncology. Karolina has published multiple peer-reviewed papers and is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Victoria and the CEO & CSO of VoxCell.


Dr. Kristen Liesch, Co-CEO, Tidal Equality, Toronto, ON

Named a Forbes D&I Trailblazer, Kristen is a provocative thought leader and disruptive entrepreneur in the DEI space. Her rigorous and research-based thought leadership has shifted how entire organizations and many DEI practitioners around the world think about the goals and the tools in the traditional DEI toolkit. Co-CEO and co-Founder of Tidal Equality, Kristen is also the co-creator of the Equity Sequence™️ which gives people around the world an elegant and practical framework for making equitable change through their day-to-day work and decision-making, wherever they work, learn, and play. At the end of the day, Kristen is an impatient person serving other impatient people with the tools they need to accelerate the pace of change toward a more equal and just world. 


Kristine Beese, Founder and CEO, Untangle Money, Toronto, ON

Helping women with money is what Kristine was meant to do in life. As the CEO of Untangle Money, her vision is to help close the wealth gap. She will never stop trying to find an affordable way to make the financial lives of women easier to understand and manage. Her background in finance includes seeing the epicentre of finance in Canada on RBC’s trading floor, figuring out stock price recommendations for RBC in the UK, and helping to construct a mutual fund for a boutique firm. Before that, she was an engineer in the Oil and Gas industry out in Calgary. She is a graduate of both Ivey and Queens.


Lanna Last, Co-founder and CEO, AIMA, Vancouver, BC

Lanna (BA, MA) is a queer ecofeminist and advocate for gynecological health. Currently, she is the co-founder and CEO of AIMA Inc, a vaginal health company developing menstrual pain solutions. She continues to disrupt the system of inequalities through her unruly work and writing.


Le Luong, CEO, Nurture Growth Biofertilizer, Mississauga, ON

Le Luong is the CEO and Co-founder of Nurture Growth Biofertilizer, an award-winning circular economy company that upcycles food waste and transforms it into an organic biofertilizer by adding beneficial microorganisms to the food waste.  The greatest challenge facing humanity is the projected 25 per cent population growth from 7.8 to 9.7 billion people by 2050. Degraded soil health and climate change are also pressing global issues, needing immediate attention and action. Healthy soils have a critical role in maintaining crop yields and producing high quality crops. Pesticides and chemicals sprayed on plants contaminate the soil, water supply and air when overused.  Using biology instead of chemistry, Nurture Growth’s biofertilizer helps to feed the soil and provide nutrients to plants without the use of synthetic fertilizer. Food waste is the third-largest emitter of GHG and Nurture Growth is helping to fight climate change by upcycling food waste and helping farmers grow sustainably. 

 With more than two decades of executive management, international business development, project management, and sales/marketing experiences, Le is a seasoned business executive who is known for her passion and hard work ethic. She is resourceful, innovative, result-oriented, and a very strong communicator. When Le immigrated to Canada in 1981, her family farmed cucumbers and now she returns to her roots in agriculture to help farmers. In her spare time, Le involves herself in high-profile community projects to encourage civic engagement. Le is also passionate about youth leadership development and refugee resettlement and is often asked to speak at conferences about these topics.


Dr. Lorian Taylor, COO, LyfeMD, Calgary, AB

Dr. Taylor is the Research Director for ASCEND (Alberta’s Collaboration of Excellence for Nutrition in Digestive Disease, www.ascendalberta.ca) and is a registered dietitian. She is the Chief Operating Officer of LyfeMD, a mobile application delivering anti-inflammatory diets and lifestyle therapies for inflammatory bowel disease, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and inflammatory arthritis. She has published over 40 scientific papers exploring the role of nutrition and physical activity on health and has numerous certifications in health counselling and  cognitive behaviour therapy. She studied behavioural and health psychology because even though she had knowledge she still struggled with consistent lifestyle behaviour change. Part of the inspiration for LyfeMD was her personal struggle with inflammation and trying to find effective evidence-based lifestyle solutions.


Lourdes Juan, Founder and CEO, Knead Technologies, Calgary, AB

Lourdes is a Calgary-based entrepreneur and Urban planner, with a Masters in Environmental Design, who has founded a diverse array of organizations including Hive Developments, Soma Spa, Knead Technologies, Leftovers and Fresh Routes. As a daughter of immigrants, Lourdes’ parents instilled in her a passion for taking care of her community. This has been a driving force behind her tireless work to solve problems including by creating two non-profit organizations that address dignified food access and newly founded a tech company to redirect food surplus. Lourdes’ community advocacy is vast and also includes serving on numerous local and national boards related to urban planning and design, development appeals, affordable housing, impact investment and business leadership. Lourdes is a mom to a one-year-old son who inspires her to continue to work towards building a brighter future for Calgary.


Dr. Macarena Cataldo-Hernadez, CEO, Viridis Research, Vancouver, BC

Macarena Cataldo-Hernandez is Co-founder, CEO, and creator of the intellectual property being implemented for VIridis Research. A chemical engineer with a Ph.D. in Electrochemical Water Treatment from the Turin Polytechnic University in Italy. She has worked for more than 12 years on drinking and wastewater treatment projects for companies, such as SMAT (Metropolitan Water Company of Turin), European Space Agency, Fracking Company in Texas, and Reseau WaterNet to name a few. She has experience in transitioning start-up technologies from the lab into the field and has more than 20 academic publications and founder pending patents. When she is not working at Viridis, she volunteers in a community radio station and practices Jiujitsu.


Meaghan Nolan, Co-founder and COO, Mikata Health, Calgary, AB

Meaghan is co-founder of mikata, software that makes outstanding care easy. Today, more than 500 doctors across Canada use mikata, and this number is expected to double by the end of the year. Originally from Alberta, Meaghan has worked as a User Experience Designer in New York City working with Fortune 100 companies in healthcare and other industries. She is passionate about the potential of technology to transform the experience of going to the doctor.


Dr. Mehrsa Raeiszade, Co-founder and COO, MintList, Vancouver BC

Mehrsa Raeiszadeh, co-founder and COO of MintList, holds a Ph.D. in Process Engineering from Georgia Tech and has a background in technology development & operations management, including working for large corporations and early stage startups. She has 10+ patents, disclosures and 20+ scientific publications under her belt, and is the only person to have won 1st place in the New Ventures BC competition twice in its 20 year history. She co-founded MintList to change the way cars are bought and sold today. Since establishing MintList with her cofounder in 2020, Mehsa has successfully oversubscribed 2 rounds of fundraising including a Seed round by more than 80% in just 3 weeks. She also serves as a mentor and judge for the New Ventures BC, YELL Canada and Futurpreneur.


Dr. Melanie Morrison, Co-founder and CEO, BetterCart, Saskatoon, SK

Melanie Morrison, PhD, has spent much of her life as an academic, conducting research on stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination, publishing extensively, and managing as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator, a series of pan-Canadian, multi-million dollar grants.  In 2018, Melanie extended her research interests in racism, sexism, and 2SLGBTQ negativity, and began addressing classism and food security through technology. Now CEO and Founder of BetterCart Analytics, Melanie's company specializes in advanced price analytics that help food producers, processors, manufacturers, and independent grocers execute their pricing strategies and engage in data-driven negotiations. 


Nadia Ladak, Founder, Marlow, Toronto, ON

Nadia Ladak (she/her) is passionate about start-ups and inspiring the next generation of entrepreneurial leaders. She is the founder of Marlow, a menstrual health brand that has created the first-ever lubricated tampon for smoother and more comfortable insertion. She is also on the Startup Canada Women Advocacy Network where she participates in government roundtables to advocate for funding and resources for female founders. Nadia is committed to giving back to her community through her role as a catalyst board member at Holland Bloorview Children's Hospital and as a mentor for the Junior Achievement Company Program where she provides weekly coaching to high school students as they operate their own small businesses. In her free time, you can find her reading, playing her guitar, or spending time outside biking & camping.


Randeep Purewal, Founder and CEO, Divercial, Toronto, ON

Randeep Purewal, MBA is the CEO and Founder of Divercial. Divercial is a B2B SaaS Tool helping organizations build inclusive cultures and diversifying talent management. The work of Divercial advocates for objective and unbiased hiring practices to level the playing field for all candidates while optimizing an engaging employee experience. As workplace dynamics continue to evolve, Divercial provides innovative and disruptive solutions for organizations to build strategies and programs that attract, develop, and retain talent as well as DEI programming. Randeep’s previous experience includes over 15 years in the financial sector covering a multitude of roles from Leadership and Strategy to Sales, Data & Analytics, Operations and Project Management. She obtained her MBA from Queen’s Smith School of Business and is involved in a variety of passion projects covering Talent, Fintech, Sports, Tech and Diversity.


Shannon Snaden, Co-founder, 8 Bit Cortex, Calgary, AB

Shannon Snaden completed her MBA at University of Calgary in 2019 where she learned about entrepreneurship and was introduced to the neuroscience community through hackathons. She brings her experience in strategy, continuous improvement and marketing as Co-Founder of 8 Bit Cortex which was the 2020 Start-Up Calgary Launch Party People's Choice award winner. 8 Bit Cortex is filling the gap in mental wellness services by developing gamified mental health assessments and is focused on reducing corporate burnout. Shannon has been a finalist in three 2020 MIT COVID-19 Challenges, finished top 3 at a TechStars hackathon, and has placed 1st in the IXL Global Innovation Olympics. In her spare time she enjoys travelling across Canada, visiting hot springs, and hiking.


Shelvie Fernan, Co-founder and CEO, Fly and Fetch, Edmonton, AB

Shelvie is the CEO and Co-founder of Fly and Fetch. Entering Canada as an immigrant, Shelvie used her deep understanding of international shipping challenges and needs of immigrants, and created Fly and Fetch to make international shipping cheaper, faster, and friendlier. Shelvie’s post-secondary background is in Electronic Engineering, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and Marketing contributes to her unique female entrepreneurial skills. She also lead international students and Filipino- Canadian community for more than three years which hone her leadership skills and expanded her network. Shelvie believes in the power of community which is why Fly and Fetch is built as a shipping company powered by a community working together so the world gets better shipping services.


Susan Blanchet, Founder and CEO, Origen Air, Victoria, BC

Susan Blanchet, co-founded Origen Air in 2019 with a utopian vision of improving indoor life using the power of plants. Susan has an immense passion for the protection and preservation of the natural environment. Her entrepreneurial spirit has soared as the leader of Origen Air. A lifetime spent sailing and exploring the wild west coast of Canada fueled Susan’s passionate, proactive approach to life that has served her well as the CEO of Origen Air. Entering year three of her company, Susan leads a team of 17, raised over $2.3M in investment, filed several patents, formed key alliances and channel partners, forged international relationships through trade missions and spearheaded national and international expansion pathways for Origen Air. While balancing genetically enhanced plants, air purification technology, eager customers, and savvy investors, Susan is also the proud mom of three exceptional young men. Professionally, Susan has been a lawyer, commercial realtor, home renovation specialist, and provincially licensed soccer coach. She embodies the motto “Giving while Living”. In 2017, Susan raised $25,000 USD to purchase land and build a school in Siem Reap, Cambodia after she visited the region and forging life-long connections to the local families in need. In the future Susan wants to give back to under-represented entrepreneurs in their quest to cross the commercialization chasm.


Sydney Wuttunee, Founder and CEO, SeekPeak, Calgary, AB

Sydney is a mother, avid traveller and creator, passionate about technology, business, the arts and culture. A lifelong reluctance to accept status quo and to shoot for the stars has landed her here—setting out to disrupt a long-accepted, broken system with a positive alternative that benefits all involved. Sydney had her entrepreneurial start at 16, hosting all ages concerts with Juno-Award winning artists. Since then, she has held roles in Marketing, Communications and Fund Development, her most prominent work including running successful PR campaigns with full-front page Calgary Herald features, television appearances and national coverage. Before co-founding SeekPeak, Sydney ran a successful real estate company, ranking in the Top 10 of 175 agents within 9 months of launching her business. In her spare time, Sydney has been tapped to assist with communications and fundraising for political campaigns and has sat on the Women’s Commission as well as regional boards. She is also a proud supporter of the Arts and is a member of Contemporary Calgary’s Leadership Circle. Sydney has an Honours Degree in Communications, First Class from the University of Calgary. Her studies took her around the world, living for a time in Sweden studying Cross-Cultural Communications and travelling Ecuador as a TA for senior-level courses in Globalization and Culture.
